Living in Dubai as a Woman

Posted on December 4, 2020December 5, 2020 by admin

The middle east in general has a notorious past with being a dangerous place to live in. Let alone be a woman in.

The United Arab Emirates is a country in the Gulf often confused with Saudia Arabia where women’s rights are often criticized on a global level.

Often times people ask how safe is it to live in Dubai as a woman, so I decided to put together a list of somethings to help answer this question

Safety

As women, we’re always concerned with our safety. From getting catcalled, to straight up being groped, no female wants to live in a country where she is unsafe.

Dubai is a very safe city because it is such a heavily monitored place. Violent crimes are very rare and petty crime such as pickpocketing, scamming, and harassment are the most you’ll have to face as a female there.

Dubai has extremely strict rules and they enforce these laws ruthlessly which sometimes might affect Westerners who are not used to following such strict conservative laws.

Transportation

Unlike in many cities in the world, Dubai is not for walking.

To get around Dubai, you will need to use a car or public transportation. It is preferred to just rent your own car, since Dubai has cheap gas prices and parking is everywhere. However, in the event that you decide not to rent a car there are female only alternatives.

Pink taxis and pink train carriage made specifically for women and children are available around the city for the comfort and safety of female passengers.

Getting a job in Dubai

Although the work force in Dubai is primarily made up of men, women are also entering the workforce.

To get a job in Dubai, you’ll need a visa sponsored by the company that’s hiring you, and in the event that you’re married you’ll need a no-objection letter from him stating that he has no objections to you working.

Many emerging jobs in Dubai specifically request for women applicants, especially in administrative roles.

Generally speaking, however, the best jobs are giving to locals with Emirati nationalities.

Entertainment and culture

One thing about Dubai is it has something for everyone. Whether you like to go to the mall at 9pm and shop around or want to go for a drink late at night, there is always something to do.

People generally are always busy sight seeing and enjoying Dubai while living there.

Since Dubai’s feature landmarks are man-made, they are often surrounded with the latest surveillance and 24 hour security. Such places are extremely safe and very family friendly, so you will not only enjoy your time but also feel comfortable doing so.

It is important to note that due to the conservative culture of the Gulf region, it’s preferred that women not expose too much skin. However, with globalization being on the rise, such expectations are slowly being forgotten with the new generation accepting such changes.
